What is the difference between a dental hygienist and a dentist?A dental hygienist specializes in preventive oral care, including cleanings, exams, and educating patients on daily oral hygiene. Dentists diagnose and treat dental issues such as cavities and perform procedures like fillings, extractions, and restorative treatments. Hygienists focus on keeping your teeth healthy, while dentists address more advanced treatments.
-
What is an independent Dental Hygienist? An independent dental hygienist is a licensed professional who provides dental hygiene services without the direct supervision of a dentist. Independent hygienists often focus on preventive care, performing cleanings, assessments, and education to promote oral health among their patients.
-
What should I expect during my first dental hygiene visit? At your first visit, we’ll conduct a comprehensive oral exam, discuss your dental history, and clean your teeth to remove plaque and tartar. We’ll also provide tips for maintaining your oral health and answer any questions you may have about your routine.
-
How often should I get my teeth cleaned? For most people, professional cleanings every six months are ideal to maintain oral health and prevent plaque buildup. However, if you have specific dental concerns like gum disease, your hygienist or dentist may recommend more frequent visits.

What are complimentary whitening conditionsWe're thrilled to offer a complimentary teeth whitening service with every full cleaning! To ensure the best results and protect your smile’s health, please note a few conditions where whitening may not be the best choice right now: Restorative Work on Front Teeth Whitening products only work on natural teeth, meaning fillings, crowns, or veneers on your front teeth won’t change color. This can result in an uneven appearance, so we recommend discussing options with our team if you have restorative work. Sensitivity For those with sensitive teeth, whitening may increase discomfort or cause heightened sensitivity. Our top priority is your comfort, so let us know if you experience this, and we’ll help find the best solution for you. Tooth Decay Whitening products can irritate decayed areas, leading to pain or further sensitivity. We suggest treating any decay first, then revisiting whitening options to keep your smile healthy and bright. Pregnant or Nursing For safety, we recommend that those who are pregnant or nursing wait to whiten until after this period. Your health and your baby’s health are our top priorities! Periodontal (Gum) Disease Whitening can irritate gum disease symptoms and may not provide effective results. For a healthier, brighter smile, we suggest treating gum disease first and then discussing whitening options. Children Under 16 Young teeth are still developing, and whitening can cause sensitivity or other issues in children under 16. We encourage parents to wait until children are older to consider whitening. If you’re unsure whether whitening is right for you, just ask! We’re here to help ensure you get the safest, most effective results.

What is scaling and root planing, and when is it needed?Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning procedure that removes tartar buildup below the gumline and smooths the tooth roots. This procedure is essential for those with periodontal disease, as it helps reduce gum inflammation and promotes healing.
-
Are dental x-rays safe?Yes, dental x-rays are safe and involve minimal radiation exposure, especially with modern digital x-rays. They’re essential for identifying issues not visible to the naked eye, helping catch potential problems early.
-
Do i need Xray's? or what if I just got them taken?Whether you need x-rays depends on several factors related to your dental health. When were they last taken? Do you get frequent cavities? Are you having any pain? Your dental hygienist will evaluate your specific situation and determine if they are needed at that time. If you recently got them done with in 6-12 months then you can get them sent from the office they were taken at and vice versa. Having dental x-rays taken every 12 months is a common practice and is recommended that helps us as dental professionals assess generalized bone health, early detection of cavities, infections and identifying hidden issues that we cannot see with the naked eye.
-
How can I reduce tooth sensitivity?Sensitivity can often be reduced by using a toothpaste specifically for sensitive teeth, avoiding acidic foods and drinks, and ensuring proper brushing technique. For persistent sensitivity, our desensitizing treatments offer relief by applying a special coating to reduce nerve sensitivity.
-
What are sealants, and how do they help?Sealants are a protective coating applied to the grooves of your molars to prevent food particles from settling in and causing decay. They’re an excellent preventive option, especially for children and teens, and can last several years with proper care.
-
Does teeth whitening harm enamel?Professional teeth whitening is generally safe for your enamel, especially when done by a qualified dental hygienist. Over-the-counter whitening kits can sometimes cause sensitivity or enamel damage if used improperly, so it’s best to consult a professional for optimal results.
-
What’s the purpose of fluoride treatment?Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel, making it more resistant to decay and sensitivity. Regular fluoride treatments are especially beneficial for those prone to cavities, and they’re safe when administered by a professional.
-
Is it necessary to floss daily?Yes, flossing daily helps remove plaque and food particles between teeth, areas that brushing alone can’t reach. Daily flossing reduces the risk of cavities and gum disease, keeping your gums healthy and your smile bright.

Can I still see my regular dentist or do i need their permission to get my cleanings at your dental hygiene clinic? No you dont need their permission. Yes. you can definitely see both your regular dentist and an independent hygiene clinic. Many people choose to visit a dental hygienist for routine cleanings and preventive care while maintaining their relationship with their dentist for more comprehensive dental services and treatments. It is encouraged having both a hygienist and a dentist it allows for a more tailored approach to your oral health, with the hygienist focusing on prevention and maintenance and the dentist addressing more complex issues when necessary. You have the right to decide who you see for your cleanings the same way you have the right to choose what dentist you see. We collaborate with other healthcare professionals to offer you the best care possible.
